Happy New Year!

I’ve got a nice quiet evening planned with the family. We’re making Turkey right now and I’ll be texting my New Years message to Times Square between 11 and 12.

My toast to the Mobile Marketing Watch readers is “here’s to a prosperous 2008 for each of you!

Happy New Year.

Will Mobile Advertising Cause A Privacy Uproar In 2008?

The Boston Globe published interesting Associated Press mobile marking article today regarding advertising on cellphones.

The carriers are more than a little spooked at the location based services that everyone believes are right around the corner. Guess why? The carriers are afraid that some of their customers might not be all that jazzed to receive a location based offer from a Merchant while standing in or near the Merchants store. So much so they believe that some of their customers will get annoyed and switch to a rival service.

Look at this quote from the article:

“We have great expenses with customers leaving one company and going to another,” Verizon Wireless spokesman Jeffrey Nelson said. “One thing I can guarantee Verizon Wireless will not do is get a bump of short-term advertising dollars while scaring and losing our customers in the process.”

Ah, the dreaded switch. That sounds like it’s more about money than privacy for Verizon doesn’t it? Someone might want to remind Jeffery that the consumer pays too… something along the lines of early termination fee.

We haven’t even come close to hearing the last of this topic; privacy groups are going to be all over this issue in 2008 as this technology grows and mobile advertising spending increases. Not to mention Google released a mobile web app earlier this year that is capable of pinpointing your mobile phone location w/o gps.

IMC Is Coming To New York

Internet Marketing ConferenceThe Internet Marketing Conference usually takes place in Europe but is coming to New York in June.

I’ve been told that the conference is going to have a mobile theme this year and I’ve been asked about my interest in speaking. I’m honored for the invite but I’ll be in Norway or on a cruise somewhere with my Family during the Month of June.

Thanks for the invite Lars.

Official Comments From Chevron Regarding The 700Mhz Auction

ChevronI queried Chevron last week after I wrote this post regarding their intentions with the 700MHz auction. Mickey Driver, a corporate spokesperson for Chevron left me a voice mail on my mobile phone indicating that Chevron is not going to be commenting on this at all. I’ve not called him back yet because I want to think about this and talk to someone close to me that previously worked for Chevron that doesn’t have specific knowledge of their plans but would certainly understand the need to backbone their own communications.

Chevron wouldn’t be making this investment for their own communication purposes unless they felt it would pay for itself within a reasonable time-frame right? Perhaps that’s what they’re after, a company of this size must be paying millions annually for their communication services. Personally, I don’t think that’s it, it might be to an extent. This space is going to cost billions so their plan would need to include something along the lines of revenue generation don’t you think? I have an idea of what that may be and I’m going to work on it later tonight; right now I’m off to the gym for an afternoon workout.
