It’s a mobile statistic big enough to make your fingers hurt just thinking about it.
According to a new report from ABI Research, 7 trillion SMS messages will be sent globally in 2011. Based on the projections, those texts will be the social media spawn of 4.2 billion mobile subscribers.
That 7 trillion number, however, is a catch-all for SMS, MMS, mobile email, and IM messaging.
In addition to the obvious reality that more young people than ever have access to mobile devices and, consequently, will continue utilizing texting to an unprecedented extent, ABI notes that low penetration of PCs in many locations around the world is prompting people to use their smartphones and other mobile gadgets for email and other forms of digital messaging.
ABI Practice Director Neil Strother says “Mobile messaging has distinct advantages for companies communicating with their customers. It is universal, cost-effective and reliable, and most people have their phones with them and switched on most of the time.”

I believe sms messages will increase with popular text messaging softwares like http://www.firetext.com be used by more and more businesses to interact with their customers. Also more concerts & live events are using Text to screen and tweet to screen features to captivate their audience's attention.
We live in a mobile world… businesses should be evolving to adopt this sms technology, because people aren't going to give it up.
I wander why SMS wap push did not take a strong push and become a trend, I believe that if advertisers can send a full brochure with their SMS via wap this will help their target clients to know more via viewing this brochure or application sent with the SMS.
I saw this idea in http://www.adsblue.com/en they develop branded applications based on J2ME for advertisers and advertising agencies.
Also bluetooth marketing should be a good idea
