According to sources close to the Internet retail giant, Amazon is gearing up to challenge the Apple TV.
Entering yet another another major product category, Amazon is said to be working on its own set-top box.
For now, the device in question carries the internal codename “Cinnamon.” Not surprisingly, it’s a small device that rivals an Apple TV in size and similarly run apps and streams content from a host of sources.
According to the Wall Street Journal, this product would “also serve as a delivery vehicle for Amazon’s existing streaming video service—available as part of its Prime membership—which competes with Netflix Inc. and has been expanding lately.”
As of this writing, Amazon hasn’t confirmed the device’s existence, price, or time-frame for market introduction. But sources say it could be here before the holiday shopping season begins in earnest.
