Apple’s iPad 2 May Promote Further Mobile Health Advancements

Apples iPad 2 May Promote Further Mobile Health Advancements 281x300 Apples iPad 2 May Promote Further Mobile Health AdvancementsThe burgeoning use of contemporary computing technologies in healthcare may increase exponentially with tomorrow’s release of Apple’s iPad 2.

According to a new report from InformationWeek, “if the launch of Apple’s iPad 2 is any indication of what’s in store for mobile health, then 2011 promises to be a year of tremendous strides in the development of mobile devices and software applications used in healthcare.”

John Halamka, the CIO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts tells InformationWeek that the iPad is already helping physicians “engage with patients” because it enables doctors to easily and quickly show images and other pertinent data to patients.

A recent survey by Aptilon showed that the iPad retains a very high approval rating from healthcare professionals. Of the survey respondents, a substantial 79% expressed a preference for the iPad. Only 12% preferred Windows PC-based devices and the remaining 9% favored Android-based tablets.

According to no shortage of tech analysts and medical professionals, the iPad 2 will likely enjoy an even faster welcome by the medical community than the first-generation Apple tablet. Why? The iPad 2′s A5 dual-core processor dramatically ramps up the performance and speed of the tablet – a critical improvement in its medical field application. The graphics on the iPad 2 are also dramatically improved upon, a reality that stands to benefit medical images like CT scans, x-rays, and ultrasound scans.

But as the InformationWeek report also suggests, the iPad 2′s front and rear facing cameras could be vitally important in rural areas “where there are fewer specialists and resources.” An attending physician, for example, “can take pictures of their patients’ wounds, upload the images, and share them with colleagues as they seek to improve patient care.”

Although the iPad 2 stands to help physicians and patients in myriad ways, the release of the refreshed tablet ultimately stands as yet another clear indication of the rapid pace with which the healthcare industry is adopting and adapting to mobile technologies that could, in many instances, make administering medical care both faster and smarter.
