New data from IDC shows that worldwide tablet shipments grew to 47.6 million units in the third quarter of 2013.
Preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker confirms that, while slightly below the firm’s forecast, the number still represents 7.0% growth over the previous quarter and 36.7% growth compared to the third quarter of 2012.
Not surprisingly, Android products once again drove much of the shipment growth in the market as iOS growth stalled (that was expected in the absence of a new iPad) and Windows tablets continued to struggle to win over consumers.

The following is a guest contributed post from Christine Oliveri, Vice President of Operations, Client Services for I.Predictus.
Isaac Asimov, the prolific author and biochemistry professor, once remarked that “If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them.”
I would add an addendum: we cannot solve problems through opinions either.
In the business world, there is a tendency to rely on what the folks at Amazon call “HiPPOs,” or the Highest Paid Person’s Opinion. And where there is a dearth of data, there is going to be a surplus of HiPPOs.

Would you believe you can feed data coming from various sources (even thousands of different sources like mobile devices) into a system, describe what information to extract in a few lines of code, and have the results at your fingertips now? In real-time? While the system keeps running?
And you can thank the rapid growth of mobile data for this boom. Mobile apps are constantly producing a mountain of information like user behavior data (session starts, events, transactions) and machine generated data (crashes, apps logs, location data, network logs). It’s the value in this constant stream of data that gives “Big Data” the mainstream recognition and constant chatter you’re seeing and hearing today.

The following is a guest contribution submitted to MMW from Anabel Perez, President & CEO of NovoPayment, the leading payments technology services company in Latin America.
Every second of every day, banks, retailers, payments organizations and a broad network of companies across the region play host to a vast flowing river of transactional data. From the tiny ripples of single transactions to massive waves of batch settlements, this information comes from customers, merchants and even third parties. Most of this data is recorded and stored for invoicing, account statements, auditing and fraud prevention, but it’s poorly exploited when it comes to generating new revenue sources and businesses.
That’s right – businesses. Those countless daily transactions containing data have real value and are the “prima materia” or source material for improving profitability, efficiency, customer experience and customer loyalty, and fashioning new, finished products. How, is this possible? Here are five initial steps you can take to start monetizing your company’s data:
