“Busting Through the Silos: Mobile Messaging’s Role in a Cross-channel World,” a Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) webinar, could help marketers understand the critical points of engagement and how to leverage text messaging marketing.
The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, February 24 from 1 to 2 p.m. CST.
“The focus of the MMA webinar is to discuss how text messaging marketing must be at the center of any cross-channel marketing strategies,” say the webinar’s organizers. “In today’s ever-changing fast paced world, consumers are adopting new ways to communicate with brands via their mobile phones. However, brands are still missing critical points of engagement leveraging text messaging within their cross-channel communication strategy.”

“This week, I received a text from my bank with my weekly balance. My driver texted me the location where he was parked. I booked plane tickets and got a text confirmation. And my doctor sent me a reminder so I wouldn’t forget my appointment the next day.”
Mathilde Collin gets a lot of SMS messages. And she likes them, according to her recent essay in Gigaom. The co-founder and CEO of Front, an app that improves shared inboxes, Collin believes SMS is the trump card in today’s game of getting through the clutter to reach customers.
“Why has everyone started sending me texts all of a sudden?” Collin asks. “Maybe it’s because, unlike my emails, I read all of them. And I’m not alone: ninety percent of all SMS are read within three minutes of being received. And since roughly 91 percent of the world adult population owns a cellphone, undoubtedly mobile is eating the world.”

The unnerving trend of mobile spam proliferation has found its way to WhatsApp in no short supply.
The latest research from AdaptiveMobile shows an alarming rate of spam targeting the hugely popular mobile messaging platform, particularly across Europe and India.
In effect, the spam explosion comes as the latest evidence of spammers moving away from SMS to concentrate on OTT (Over-The-Top) messaging platforms.

The gavel has come down on mobile social network company Path. The firm will not be able to appeal the decision giving the go-ahead to a consumer’s class-action lawsuit regarding unwanted text messages.
The Illinois 7th Circuit Court of Appeals recently made the ruling against Path, a popular messaging service for Android, which reportedly sent bulk SMS messages to some users’ entire phone books, asking contacts to sign up or relaying “notifications.”
It’s not the first time this issue has reared its ugly head. A simply Google search shows a raft of commentary on the Path methodology. Here’s one, posted at Phandroid more than a year ago: “Word began spreading a few days ago after Path seemingly wigged out on a few users, sending mass SMS messages to everyone in their phone book — ex girlfriends, tire shops, grandmas, etc. — notifying them that the sender had “photos” for them waiting on Path. Not the kind of thing you would want sent to your buddy’s wife on a Friday night.”

As electronic devices continue to play a vital role in daily communication, there are some differences in how mobile communications transpire from country to country. For example, in 2013 “chat apps” were significantly more popular than SMS / text messaging in the U.K.
The tide now seems to be turning, however.
Chat apps, of course, are mobile apps which allow individuals to instant message in the same manner they would through text messages, but chat apps generally do not impact monthly text messaging limits.

eCommerce is undoubtedly a driving force in the world of retail and business, and many believe that mCommerce will slowly but surely capture a larger portion of all online shopping, but retailers are still searching for the best way to encourage mobile commerce.
Currently, approximately 23% of smartphone owners make at least one mobile purchase per month. This could be anything from pre-ordering morning coffee or lunch, buying through a well-recognized ecommerce app such as iTunes or Amazon, or sending an e-gift to a friend.
While 23% is not bad, it is still fairly low, leaving retailers looking for more ways to encourage mobile shopping. Consequently, many are turning to SMS to get the job done.

Could young people benefit from a text message service that jogs their thoughts and actions about bullying?
DoSomething.org, the largest organization for young people and social change, and Be a STAR, an anti-bullying initiative co-founded in 2011 by The Creative Coalition and global entertainment company WWE, think so.
The organizations have partnered up to offer “The Bully Text: Superstar Edition,” a campaign that employs an SMS text message game to encourage young people to take action to combat bullying.
