<p>Siano, it seems, is moving toward an initial public offering sometime next year. The prominent manufacturer of chips that allow mobile devices to receive digital TV signals has CEO Alon Ironi giving ample consideration to the potential of mobile television &#8211; an industry the company head believes is in need of an image makeover.</p>
<p>“We need to see the creation of a positive perception of the mobile-TV market in the eyes of the financial community,” Ironi tells Bloomberg. “It’s almost a condition for going public. Right now, if you talk to an average analyst, all they know about mobile TV is it failed.”</p>
<blockquote><p><span id="more-20198"></span>The global market for mobile-TV receiver chips may reach 159.4 million units in 2015, up from 99 million chips this year, according to research firm Forward Concepts Co. While Asia currently leads in mobile-TV adoption, success in the U.S. is key for holding an IPO here, Ironi said.</p></blockquote>
<p>Despite the exponential growth of mobile across a wide range of industries in recent years, fewer than 25 million Americans watch video on mobile devices today, IE Market Research Corp says.</p>
<p>One of the biggest indicators of the industry&#8217;s struggle came when Qualcomm’s subscription-based Flo service was closed earlier this year.</p>
<p>What remains to be seen is if and how Siano &#8220;can succeed in a market where Qualcomm failed.&#8221; That&#8217;s according to Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts. “I am a skeptic,” Strauss told <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-29/siano-sets-its-sights-on-u-s-mobile-tv-market-moving-toward-possible-ipo.html" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a> this week. “Qualcomm got out of it &#8212; it may be a clue.”</p>

<p>MobiTV, the popular platform that enables smartphone users to watch live television, filed to raise upwards of $75 million in an initial public offering of stock, according to a <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2011/08/31/bloomberg1376-LQT8DR6S972E01-644JOLP58G5P7HAHB54CBBJM9C.DTL" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a> report late Wednesday.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, however, did not reveal how many shares MobTV is planning to offer. Although MobiTV plans to trade under the symbol MBTV, it has not yet been revealed which exchange the shares would be listed on.</p>
<p><span id="more-18302"></span>In the last week of August alone, a number of names in the digital realm announced plans to go public, including Angie&#8217;s List Inc. and Jive Software Inc.</p>
<p>JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. and Deutsche Bank AG are managing the MobiTV IPO, with assistance from Robert W. Baird &amp; Co., William Blair &amp; Co. and Pacific Crest Securities.</p>
<p>At present, MobiTV&#8217;s biggest investor is Gefinor Ventures, which controls 23.1 percent of the company.</p>

<p>According to the Open Mobile Video Coalition of America&#8217;s (OMVC) broadcasters, myriad TV broadcast stations are presently working overtime to install new transmission equipment that will allow live, local TV signals to reach viewers wherever they go in a local market.</p>
<p>The estimates come from a new survey of member plans spearheaded by the OMVC, which says that 96 stations are already on-the-air with Mobile DTV.</p>
<p><span id="more-17652"></span>That number is on pace to reach 126 (in 48 markets) by the end of this year.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our stations throughout the country are now deploying the equipment needed to bring Dyle mobile TV to millions of viewers,&#8221; said Erik Moreno and Salil Dalvi, co-GM&#8217;s of MCV. &#8220;We&#8217;re very excited about the rollout of the Dyle service to consumers,&#8221; they added.</p>
<p>&#8220;OMVC members are making the investments needed to make Mobile DTV available to millions of viewers,&#8221; said Colleen Brown, CEO of Fisher Communications and chair of the Mobile 500 Alliance. The Mobile500 Alliance represents more than 400 local TV broadcasters who are planning to add Mobile DTV capability to their digital broadcasts. &#8220;Mobile DTV channels now being transmitted are providing viewers with the latest news, emergency weather information, traffic updates, and their favorite programs,&#8221; Brown concluded.</p>

<p>The companies said in a joint press release Wednesday morning that the core entertainment package consists of news, sports and other select entertainment, with genre-specific content packages also available.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s even a Spanish-speaking package featuring content from Univision and other providers. Conversely, a children&#8217;s programming package featuring premium content from Nickelodeon, PBS Kids and more is also available.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our partnership with MobiTV represents another opportunity for us to delight customers with quality TV entertainment whenever and wherever they want,&#8221; says Joe Settimi, Senior Director of Data Strategy and Services for U.S. Cellular. &#8220;Additionally, U.S. Cellular Mobile TV will operate on our high-speed nationwide network so users can access information quickly and enjoy everything their cell phone has to offer.&#8221;</p>

<p>HBO Go saw 1 million downloads in its first week of availability alone.</p>
<p><span id="more-16545"></span>Distinct from the likes of Hulu+, HBO go users have unlimited access to every episode of their favorite shows. By doing so, HBO is sending a clear message to major rivals &#8211; including Netflix, which doesn&#8217;t offer the uninterrupted fleet of HBO programming.</p>
<p>As a result, HBO may have successfully established a customer deterrent to Netflix, particularly among users who could have otherwise jumped ship.</p>
<p>Putting HBO&#8217;s impressive downloads into perspective, the premium cable network presently enjoys 28 million subscribers. The 3 million customers who have downloaded the HBO Go app (more than 10% of HBO&#8217;s total audience) suggest longtime subscribers are quickly adopting the mobile platform &#8211; a reality that bodes well for HBO&#8217;s future revenue streams, particularly as audiences rapidly move away from the television screen to absorb entertainment content via mobile device.</p>

<p>A lot of attention has centered upon E3 this year, given that major press conferences from Ubisoft, Microsoft and Electronic arts are on tap for the coming days. Although rumors have persisted for weeks that Microsoft will unveil a next-generation video gaming console, most industry analysts believe a new service on the current Xbox system is most likely.</p>
<p><span id="more-15964"></span>Last week, Frank Shaw, Microsoft&#8217;s corporate vice president of corporate communications, released an interesting post on the company blog, saying that Microsoft&#8217;s immediate home-entertainment strategy focuses on expanding the offerings of the Xbox. &#8220;Xbox is the gateway to games, music, movies and TV shows – in short, it is central to entertainment,&#8221; Shaw wrote. &#8220;Next Monday at E3 in Los Angeles, the Xbox home entertainment pot will be boiling over during a 90-minute event,&#8221; adding that the &#8220;company is turning up the heat on a whole new era of home entertainment.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.winrumors.com/xbox-live-diamond-subscription-tv-service-to-debut-at-e3/" target="_blank">Winrumors</a>, E3 will be all about the Xbox LIVE subscription TV service for Microsoft. &#8220;The company is on lockdown for its big announcement and some demos and details might be held back if agreements are not in place in time.&#8221;</p>
<p>If sources-in-the-know are correct, the new service will be dubbed Xbox LIVE Diamond, and it will fuse Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;mediaroom IPTV services&#8221; with Xbox LIVE. &#8220;Microsoft is likely to demo deeper integration of its Avatar Kinect service and the company’s new music and video services&#8221; the report offered.</p>

<p>Netflix and Miramax, the prominent film and television studio with a library of more than 700 motion pictures,  is unveiling a multi-year agreement under which Netflix members in the US will be able to instantly watch some of the hottest films in the expansive Miramax film library.</p>
<p>The deal, about which financial terms were not made public, marks the first time Miramax titles have become available through a digital subscription service.</p>
<p><span id="more-15340"></span>Beginning in June, Netflix members in the US will be able to instantly watch several hundred Miramax movies, with dozens of titles being added on a rotating basis, Netflix says.</p>
<p>The movies can be watched on multiple platforms &#8211; TV, tablet, computer and even mobile phones.</p>
<p>&#8220;Netflix is thrilled to enter into this deal with the new team at Miramax,&#8221; said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.  &#8220;Existing relationships with management and a shared affinity for these great films make this an important deal for both companies and for our members, who will enjoy instantly watching movies from one of the truly great film libraries for many years to come.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;From day one, we&#8217;ve been very clear about the importance of digital and our desire to respond to the significant pent-up demand for our films &#8212; delivering to consumers whenever and wherever they want,&#8221; said Mike Lang, CEO of Miramax.  &#8220;This agreement is an important first step in our digital strategy. We&#8217;re thrilled to now be in business with them as we build and revitalize the proud Miramax brand.&#8221;</p>
<p>Netflix presently boasts some 23 million members in the United States and Canada.</p>

The app also offers region-specific content, ensuring viewers from across the globe can easily access their preferred news and entertainment channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Mundu TV looks and acts like regular television &#8211; only on-the-go,&#8221; Geodesic boasts. &#8220;It offers a mix of prime-time television and movie content from top channels across various genres, such as business, news, sports and entertainment, as well as live coverage of events.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to the official announcement of the service, the app serves up all your commonplace TV features, including the ability to switch channels and pause live TV. It also streams to both mobile and desktop devices for one subscription price &#8211; $6 per month or $15 per quarter</p>
<p>Mundu TV is available as a downloadable app, or as a white-labeled solution for broadcast network operators and mobile carriers.</p>
