The findings draw attention to the runaway momentum of online video consumption.</p>
<p>According to the information presented by comScore, 182 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content in December 2011.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s averages out to more than 23 hours per viewer.</p>
<p>The total U.S. Internet audience viewed 43.5 billion videos. Not surprisingly, Google Sites &#8211; but YouTube chiefly among them &#8211; ranked as the top online video content property in December with 157.2 million unique viewers.</p>
<p><span id="more-20500"></span>VEVO ranked second with 53.7 million and Yahoo! Sites ranked third with 53.3 million viewers.</p>
<p>Other notable findings from the December 2011 report include:</p>
<ul>
<li>85.3 percent of the U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.</li>
<li>The duration of the average online content video was 5.8 minutes, while the average online video ad was 0.4 minutes.</li>
<li>Video ads accounted for 14.1 percent of all videos viewed and 1.2 percent of all minutes spent viewing video online.</li>
</ul>

This week, the popular actor and stand-up comedian illustrated exactly how and why video can be so profitable.</p>
<p>Imbued with the idea that consumers are always more than willing to cough up a small amount of money for digital content that comes from their favorite performers, Louis CK bucked the conventional trends of distribution, DRM, ads, and other traditional marketing steps for an online video release.</p>
<p>Instead, CK simply uploaded the video to his website and made it available for purchase at the low price of just $5. The result was staggering.</p>
<p><span id="more-20149"></span>According to the famous comedian, after only four days, the video earned an impressive $200,000. And on day twelve, it had breached the $1 million threshold.</p>
<p>“The experiment was: If I put out a brand new standup special at a drastically low price ($5) and make it as easy as possible to buy, download and enjoy, free of any restrictions, will everyone just go and steal it? Will they pay for it? And how much money can be made by an individual in this manner?” CK wrote after pulling in his first quarter-million from the video.</p>
<p>Upon hitting the seven-figure mark, CK thanked his fans and pledged to donate a portion of the earnings to charity and to provide bonuses to his employees and staff. He pledged to keep only $220,000 for himself.</p>

<p>It was determined that Millennial wanted to give consumers a visual experience that was reflective of a superhero film like Green Lantern, and decided to deliver an expandable rich media banner that let consumers “imprint their fingerprint” on the ad to bring up an HD trailer for the film.  Since the film was released across Europe at different times during the summer, it required staggered and localized campaigns to support the unique release schedule.  As such, the initial campaign launched in the UK in mid-June, and crossed Germany, France and Spain before ending in Italy at the end of August.</p>
<p><span id="more-19421"></span>The collective campaign turned out to be extremely effective, as consumers responded positively to the interactive nature of the creative.  In the end, a total of 20 percent of consumers who clicked on the banner engaged with the “fingerprint scan” and over 70 percent of those users went on to watch the trailer.  Chris Gale, of Odyssey Mobile Interaction, summed it up nicely by saying that “the end result was an impactful unit, which drove strong results and clearly resonated with consumers.”</p>
<p>Well thought-out, creatively-executed rich media campaigns is what Millennial has done a great job perfecting in recent years and this campaign is a prime example of this.  Below is a brief video demo of the campaign in action.</p>

<p>During the third quarter of 2011, mobile video content consumed between 40 percent and 60 percent of wireless network data traffic.</p>
<p>Mobile web solutions provider Bytemobile finds in its report that consumer and subscriber demand for video continues to place the most strenuous tension on networks already burdened with bandwidth allocation pressures.</p>
<p><span id="more-19325"></span>Bytemobile says that 17 percent of all laptop users consume video content on a daily basis, while 11 percent of iPhone owners and 7 percent of Android users do the same.</p>
<p>Mobile subscribers tend to consume their daily video content in one session, a reality that suggests users allot a determined chunk of time to watch their chosen mobile video content &#8211; content that usually includes multiple videos from different sources.</p>
<p>By comparison, mobile video subscribers typically consume upwards of 10 videos sequentially, with each segment spanning roughly 60 seconds in length.</p>

<p>According to the latest research and accompanying data from comScore, 178 million US Internet users watched online video content in June for an average of 16.8 hours per viewer.</p>
<blockquote><p>The total U.S. Internet audience engaged in more than 6.2 billion viewing sessions during the course of the month, an all-time high.</p></blockquote>
<p><span id="more-17081"></span>&#8220;A viewing session is defined as a period of time with continuous video viewing followed by a 30-minute period of video inactivity,&#8221; comScore says.</p>
<p>comScore finds that Google Sites &#8211; with YouTube chief among them &#8211; ranked as the top online video content property in June with 149.3 million unique viewers.</p>
<p>VEVO was next with 63.0 million viewers and Yahoo! Sites enjoyed 52.7 million viewers. Microsoft Sites finished fourth with 50.7 million viewers, and Viacom Digital ranked fifth with 49.5 million viewers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Total viewing sessions surpassed the 6 billion mark for the first time, with Google Sites generating the highest number of viewing sessions (2.3 billion) and highest time spent per viewer (324 minutes, or 5.4 hours),&#8221; comScore reports.</p>

<p>Now when you&#8217;re on a friend’s profile, there will be a new button located between the ‘Message’ and ‘Poke’ buttons. The added button says ‘Call.’ Once you click the button, the friend will receive a popup message asking whether they want to accept or decline the call. If they accept, you will be immediately connected for a video chat.</p>
<p><span id="more-16817"></span>&#8220;The video calling is so great and it&#8217;s so easy,&#8221; said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the company&#8217;s Palo Alto, California headquarters, where he also confirmed that Facebook now has more than 750 million users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Your least-technical friend is going to be able to get online with video chat and get connected,&#8221; Zuckberg says of the new feature. &#8220;You&#8217;ll connect with your friends on the social network that already has all your friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>As it turns out, Facebook has integrated with Skype in a way that doesn&#8217;t place cumbersome set-up or installation burdens on Facebook users. All it takes to use the new service is a small plugin (which installs within seconds.) In fact, you don&#8217;t even need a Skype account to enjoy the video chat functionality now provided by Facebook.</p>
<p>Although Facebook&#8217;s new video platform represents a challenge to Apple&#8217;s FaceTime video chat service, there&#8217;s a possibility that Apple&#8217;s iDevices will be able to facilitate the Facebook video chat service in the near future. For the time being, however, Skype video chat in Facebook is a Web-only feature. In other words, don&#8217;t look for the &#8220;call&#8221; button within Facebook&#8217;s iPhone application.</p>

<p>As part of its <a href="http://www.freewheel.tv/docs/FreeWheelMonetizationReport_Q1_2011.pdf">Q1 2011 Video Monetization Report</a>, video advertising startup FreeWheel indicates that over 80% of all mobile video views in the U.S. are derived from iOS devices &#8212; including iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.  The iPhone and iPod Touch each account for about 30 percent of all video  views that happen on mobile devices, with the remaining 20 percent  being attributed to Android devices, according to the report.  &#8221;Other  devices&#8221; account for less than 1 percent of all video views on mobile  devices, according to the company.</p>
<p><span id="more-15615"></span>FreeWheel attributes much of Apple&#8217;s dominance to its early lead in making mobile video consumption commonplace for consumers.  In addition, Apple devices represent the priority for mobile video publishers who build for the iOS platform before all others.  Still, mobile video accounts for less than 1 percent of all Online video views, according to the report, with most of it being driven by news and live events.  Mobile views peaked during the Japanese crisis and also during the March  Madness tournament, when viewers turned to their smartphones and  mobile devices because they weren’t near a TV.</p>
