Google angered scores of longtime users over the weekend when it effectively dumped a number of popular products in one swift motion.
Among the casualties is one of the SMS-based products that had been enormously helpful to owners of low-end mobile devices or individuals without expansive data plans.
To the dismay of many, Google closed SMS Search.
One Google rep named Jessica commented on the matter on Reddit, writing the following: “Closing products always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users. Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives.”
For now, it appears that other leading SMS products from Google are still working.
Google is yet to confirm why the plug was pulled on the service and what new service may take its place.
