Fountainhead Entertainment has been renamed id Mobile. Fountainhead, which does a poor job of maintaining their web site, this announcement can’t be found on their site; is a Game Development Company owned by Katherine Kang. The gamers know Katherine, if you’re not a gamer then you don’t know that Katherine is married to John Carmack. John owns id Software and is the creator of some mega popular games like Doom and Quake.
Why are they getting into mobile? Not because mobile is going to replace PC gaming. Far from it, I don’t see that happening. The space is going to evolve though and smart companies cannot simply sit on the sidelines without getting their market share, if they do someone else will grab it. Besides it’s already a profitable business for id.
“The way I look at is we’re doing good business on mobile right now. We’ve sold nearly 2 million units on the different things, it’s profitable, it’s paying for all its development. As we step up our mobile focus, we’ll about double our effort, we should be doubling our revenues and more than doubling our profits. It should continue, in the worst case, to be this really nice addition to the business.”
John Carmack
id Mobile is looking to release 4 games per year and is projecting 20-30 mobile projects over the next 6 years.
