Not necessarily. Some of these carriers such as Metro PCS are very popular. They have an unlimited text message plan, which means that marketing this way can be very effective

Eydie: I agree that mobile marketing, specifically text-based marketing is effective, given that the stats prove this. It is up to the carriers to open the doors and let SMS campaigns thrive. The step of the major 4 carriers to join together and create standards for mobile advertising will help. I'm thinking that "killed" is a strong adjective choice for my headline when in fact I meant "killed temporarily" - not in the long term.

Pretty interesting, Adena. A few thoughts:
(1) Considering your article a few days ago about carriers working with MMA on standards, I'd think the carriers would work on making fees as affordable as possible for marketers. After all, mobile marketing campaigns are part of the reason that increasingly more consumers are using SMS.
(2) Your last graph proves that mobile marketing is effective. Meanwhile there have been recent case studies showing the extremely high ROI that opt-in SMS campaigns have. In these cases, the cost of sending texts is certainly earned back, as well as as resulting in impressive revenue.
