Opinion: How to Maximize Your LinkedIn Experience

Opinion How to Maximize Your LinkedIn Experience 300x150 Opinion: How to Maximize Your LinkedIn ExperienceThe following post is a guest contributed article from Francis Battaglia, President of Independent Talk 1100 KFNX.

LinkedIn is the number one social media site dedicated to business with over 259 million businesspeople worldwide including the top business people. I am one of the Top-Linked people on LinkedIn with over 16,500 connections. As a business person, you need to have a presence there. But what presence do you have and are you making the most of it?

Create a profile. Make sure to complete your profile, including contact info, a summary, specialties including keywords, current and previous employment, volunteer experience and causes, education and additional info including interests, honors and awards received and organizations you’re a member of. Many people, including myself, have a number of connections next to our name. My professional headline includes my title, company name and that I am an open networker or LION, LinkedIn open networker, accepting all invites. Publicizing my large network of connections and that I accept all invites garners me more invites to continue to grow my network. Recommendations establish your credibility. Ask for recommendations from current clients, previous clients and vendors. Endorsing your connections for their top skills will help you get endorsements from your connections for yourself.

Join groups that have members you want to connect with. You can join up to 50 groups. Join 50! Do a group search to find groups in or related to your industry. There’s also groups for open networkers, LIONs and Top-Linked. Check out the group profile for info on the group and how many members it has. You could also create your own group. I created a group for my company, Independent talk 1100 KFNX. You can send messages to all of the members in any of the groups you’re in including bulk messages up to 50 people at a time. Start, comment on and follow  discussions in any group including your own.

Create a company page. Include a summary, specialties including keywords and company info. Follow other companies, influencers and news in yours or related industries. You can also follow schools including your alma mater.

Add connections by sending out invitations to connect. You can search for possible connections including advanced searches using keywords,  level of connection, location, industry, current or past company or school. Bulk invitations can be sent out to all of your current connections in gmail, outlook, yahoo or any email.

Share updates on your home page or any group. Publish your posts so they show up in your connections’ notifications. Share your blog, videos, newsletter, e-zine, whitepapers, e-books and FAQ’s.

Subscribe to the daily email that notifies you of your connections’ accomplishments, birthdays, milestones, news and meetings. I send out daily messages to all, congratulating them on their accomplishments and milestones and wishing them happy birthday.

You can also post and look for jobs. Advertise in the sidebar. And see who viewed your profile and updates. If you upgrade to LinkedIn Premium for a monthly charge, you can see more information on who’s viewed you, send inmail to people you’re not connected to and do even more advanced searches by company size.

Now that you have a presence on LinkedIn and are making the most of it, you can increase the number and quality of your connections and business you receive from them. Look forward to connecting with you on LinkedIn.
