Playboy Goes Mobile With iPhone App

Mobile Marketing Playboy Goes Mobile With iPhone AppIt’s not what you would expect from men’s entertainment magazine, Playboy.

The iconic publication is finally dangling its feet into mobile waters with a new iPhone application that is subtle if not downright boring – at least in terms of the substantially more controversial, risque content common to the magazine itself.

Likely aware that pushing the envelop would mean a rejection from Apple, Playboy Enterprises International released its first official Playboy app with little content to raise eyebrows. But in the process, Playboy becomes yet another powerhouse publication to develop a mobile platform and create a new avenue for mobile advertisers to push content.

If there’s any confusion among marketers thinking that Apple has flip-flopped on its “appropriate content” policy, think again. The Playboy app download page reads the following: “This app does not contain any fully nude content.”

Developed by Jump Games and now available for download at $1.99, the iPhone and iPod Touch app lets users experience the content almost exclusively “just for the articles.” Additionally, the app serves up some relatively tame video clips and wallpapers.

The Playboy app currently features content from the November and December issues of Playboy magazine.
