Presidential Election Goes Mobile

CNN, CNBC, MSNBC and scores of other media outlets and news organizations will be informing the world tonight (on a state by state basis) via mobile marketing who won the 2008 Presidential election.

Embracing innovative new communication tools on the Internet and mobile phones to engage citizens has been central to the success of Barack Obama’s US presidential campaign and (although to a lesser extent) to John McCain’s campaign. Now, on Election Day, we will see how important mobile marketing is to the news media and to voters who will want to stay informed and up to date on a minute-by-minute basis.

Just as the United States is facing a major turning point today, so too is mobile marketing. Today, in fact, may very well be the biggest day for news through mobile marketing channels ever recorded. And the ramifications for the future of this industry may be as prophetic as they are profound.

    Michael,

Good points. For those of you looking for exact figures on mobile spending and how mobile played a part in this election see:

The 2008 presidential race: A baseline for the future of wireless campaigns

    A few figures:

The Obama campaign had paid roughly $230,000 for all SMS in the campaign starting last July and paid roughly $7,000 for a mobile web presence. Not bad when you consider he picked off some 40 million phone numbers…

Compare that to $250 million plus on TV ads. Where was the best bang for the buck…

Correction to the above comment: The Obama campaign collected well over 3 million cell numbers with final figures not yet released.

You know what though, I am not sure I approve of the way they used mobile phones. I volunteered for Obama, and still voted for him, he was still my top choice, but I got awful annoyed with his campaigners. they sent me approximately 20 texts reminding me to vote, when I pointedly asked them to stop, and getting charged 30 cents a text because there are no discount plans on the xperia x1, ads up real quick!
