Simon and Schuster Introduce “Vooks”

In a novel experiment that could either yield stunning success or abject failure, Simon and Schuster is pushing a huge mobile effort that aims to make “vooks” the hottest thing in both publishing and mobile entertainment.
So what exactly is a “vook”?
For those who aren’t familiar, vooks are digital book/video hybrids in which links to short video segments are interspersed throughout the text, all of which is viewable on a mobile device like the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Vooks on the iPhone, however, are not ostensibly intended to serve as Apple’s competition with other electronic readers like Amazon’s Kindle, which can’t support video.
Simon & Schuster has teamed with the company actually called “Vook” (a multimedia firm that produces video content for books) in order to introduce the first wave of four “vooks,” all coming from Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
“Vooks” will be sold on Simon & Schuster’s website for $6.99 each. Versions for the iPhones will be available in the Apple App store for a promotional price of $4.99.
Should mobile marketers be excited about books?
Maybe.
If the venture proves an overwhelming success, it is possible that mobile advertisers will have a whole new captive audience to target with an assortment of campaigns that could be readily tailored to this new venue.
