20% of all free applications and 80% of all paid applications have been downloaded less than 100 times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date.

Writing for the Distimo blog, author Hendrik Koekkoek says that it is “more challenging for developers in the Google Android Market than in the Apple App Store to monetize using a one-off fee monetization model. We found that only two paid applications have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date, while six paid applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone generate the same number of downloads within a two month timeframe in the United States alone.”

The new app, created by Las Vegas-based mobile application development firm Raster Media, is the first from a brand new startup aptly named BabbleOn Technologies, Inc.  The app allows users to record and post voice-based updates to their Facebook accounts as well as the BabbleOn community.  How it works is dead simple — you simply open the app (after you’ve initially connected it to your Facebook account that is), press and hold the large BabbleOn logo in the center of the screen while you record your message, and the app handles the rest by posting your recorded message to Facebook and the BabbleOn community if you choose.  You can choose to post your voice message to either your wall on Facebook or a friend’s wall.

Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, is taking direct aim at the major players in the app world by launching a new online storefront for Android apps and software.

Identical to Apple’s arrangement with developers that sell applications through the Apple App Store, Amazon will retain 30% of revenue from all app sales, with developers keeping the remaining 70%.
