While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are traditionally the largest shopping days in terms of retail sales, eBay is proving otherwise. The auction site said today that Sunday was the company’s largest day ever in terms of gross merchandise value (also known as GMV, the total sales dollar value for merchandise sold through eBay) via mobile devices.
eBay’s GMV grew 165% globally to $13M on Sunday alone, with $5M of that just in the US — up 127%. Surprisingly, eBay’s mobile sales were up 38% over Cyber Monday, with its best performing products being clothing and accessories, followed closely by cars & trucks.

LBS mainstay Gowalla today debuted a major 3.0 update to its iPhone app — one that brings two major enhancements users have been asking for; a unified checkin solution and the ability to utilize a synced “places” database between Gowalla and other LBS apps like Foursquare and Facebook Places.
As the largest update to date, Gowalla 3.0 for iPhone now includes the ability for users to not only checkin on Gowalla itself, but to share those same checkins on Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter and even Tumblr. The app now provides a solid “unified checkin solution,” which is something die-hard users and the industry in general has been waiting for. In addition, you can now see checkins from all of your friends even if they don’t use Gowalla at all.

Though it seems they’re a bit late to jump on the bandwagon, Yelp announced today they’re now offering location-based rewards to users who check in to certain locations.
Yelp’s mobile applications, and service in general, are widely popular, with the company only introducing check-in functionality last January. Since that launch, the company said it’s seen 50% month-over-month average growth on check-ins, although it makes no mention of how that translates in terms of users. Like Foursquare, Gowalla, and the droves of other LBS applications, Yelp finally supports rewards for check-ins, allowing businesses to better leverage the Yelp network.

The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) published an interesting case study today regarding the Oklahoma Lottery and its use of mobile marketing to drive sign-ups to its VIP club.
The state lottery system wanted to create a mobile VIP club to use as another marketing vehicle to create brand awareness and drive sales. An initial campaign was created and executed using both traditional and social media to begin building the mobile VIP club. The goal was to communicate that “membership has its privileges.” The promotion was executed through radio, Online and the lottery’s social media platforms on Facebook and Twitter.

Barcode Hero, the social shopping iPhone application that aims to “bring the best of Online shopping to in-store shopping,” has released its 2.0 update.
The app, which was created by Amazon.com veterans Blake Scholl and Jason Crawford, aims at “providing new and better ways for customers to find, discover, and buy products in physical stores.” Dubbing itself “more valuable than just a price comparison tool,” it lets shoppers research products they’re thinking about purchasing, gathering comments from friends and experts on those products and providing social-feedback on products before they buy — all on their mobile phones while standing in front of physical products in physical retail stores.

Turns out Flash content is still top on the list of demands for iPhone users, as the newly minted Skyfire mobile browser — which just hit the Apple App Store this morning — has already been taken down after seeing “historic demand” and crippling loads to the company’s servers just five hours after launch.
The Skyfire 2.0 mobile browser allows iPhones to access Flash-based content by compressing video and transcoding it into an iOS-ready, HTML5 format. The app, which sells for $2.99, was declared “sold out” after catapulting to the position of “Top Grossing App” in a matter of hours.

This could be the year that a single advanced Android will take over the world–or at least take a bite out of Apple.
2010 has certainly been HTC’s year. In the United States, the Taiwanese maker of cutting-edge Android handsets has drawn fanatical reviews for its Incredible (at Verizon) and EVO (at Sprint). In Europe, its wildly popular Desire–similar to the Nexus, which was sold directly by Google and could be used on the AT&T network–remained a ideal for stateside consumers, who clung to every rumor that it was coming to America.
But while HTC wowed numerous markets with numerous separate models, it was never going to unseat the iPhone–of which Apple has made different varieties for different types of networks–as the universal must-have mobile.
That may change. According to British tech news site The Inquirer, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is reviewing a dual-radio HTC phone, which would be compatible on both GSM and CDMA networks.
