ComScore today released new data on key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry as seen during Q3 2010. The report ranked the leading mobile OEMs and smartphone OS platforms in the U.S. according to their share of current mobile subscribers ages 13 and older, and reviewed the most popular mobile content usage across all demographics.
As of September, comScore indicates there are roughly 234 million Americans ages 13 and older using mobile phones. Surprisingly, Samsung holds on to the top spot in terms of OEM device manufacturers in the US with a 23.5 percent share. LG ranked second with 21.1 percent share, followed by Motorola (18.4 percent share), RIM (9.3 percent share, up 0.5 percentage points) and Nokia (7.4 percent share).

The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released numbers related to smartphone shipments, indicating massive continued growth and consumers’ appetite for full-featured mobile devices.
According to the research, vendors shipped 119.4 million smartphones for the first six months of 2010, compared to 76.8 million smartphones for the previous year. The IDC expects total shipments of 269.6 million smartphones this year, compared to 173.5 million units shipped last year, representing a 55.4% overall growth. Interestingly, this is 10% higher than the IDC previously predicted.

Millennial Media today published its “Mobile Mix” report for July, highlighting device trends from OEMs and others in the mobile ecosystem.
Apple devices and the Android OS still reign supreme as Android is now the second largest OS on Millennial’s platform for the first time and Apple’s devices now account for nearly 35% of total impressions. Motorola showed growth for July as well, with the Droid moving into the top three in July’s “Top 20 Mobile Phones” with a 5% share of impressions and the Motorola Cliq entering the Top 20 for the first time.
Surprisingly, Nintendo made its entrance to the “Top 15 Manufacturers” in July, coming in at number 15, while the iPad continued its insurgence with a 32% increase in total requests. Also interesting is news that RIM is growing in popularity with developers, as RIM apps now represent 11% of the “US Developer Platform Usage Mix” for July.

Now that Q2 figures are in, analysts at Canalys have taken a deeper comprehensive look to compile figures related to smartphone sales worldwide.
In total, smartphone shipments increased 64% worldwide compared to Q2 2009, with the U.S smartphone market growing by 41% year over year. Most interesting was Android-specific numbers. Device shipments sporting Android have increased an impressive 886% since Q2 2009, and in the U.S., Android represented 34% of the smartphones sold- an increase of 851%. Not surprising, the U.S. is the largest smartphone market in the world with 14.7M units sold during Q2 alone.
In terms of U.S. market share, RIM had 32.1% of smartphone sales in Q2, Apple had 21.7%, HTC had 14.4% and “others” accounted for 31.8%. iPhone shipments grew 61% during the past year, slower than the 64% total segment growth, but enough to put it right behind RIM as the third best selling platform with 13% for the quarter.
