Apple wants to move forward with an estimated $3.2 billion acquisition of Beats Electronics, an iconic headphone maker and music streaming operator.

The company, which was founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and recording superstar Dr. Dre, has reportedly been on Apple’s radar for an extended period of time. But only in recent weeks have acquisition talks intensified.

Two Apple Titans Sign Up for The Code Conference 300x187 Two Apple Titans Sign Up for The Code ConferenceTwo of Apple’s top executives – Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi – will share the stage with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher during May’s Code Conference at the Tarranea Resort in Palos Verdes, California.

Analogous to the many talks that late Apple CEO Steve Jobs enjoyed with Mossberg and Swisher at AllThingsD conferences, the Code Conference will perpetuate that tradition with Cue and Federighi at the event, which begins May 27th.

“Apple has been an important part of our tech conferences for a long time now — this is actually the 12th that Walt Mossberg and I will mount,” Swisher wrote in an article published Monday.

Launched in 2007, AllThingsD has emerged as a well-respected titan in the modern tech news space and the venerable brand behind an annual conference hosted by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher that has welcomed everyone from Steve Jobs to Bill Gates.

Dow Jones & Co. won’t renew its partnership with technology news website AllThingsD and said longtime Wall Street Journal technology columnist Walter S. Mossberg will leave the paper at the end of the year.

The rumor mill, which hasn’t been kind to Steve Jobs’ successor this year, suggests that Apple’s board is continuing to apply pressure on Cook to innovate at a more aggressive pace as investors nervously await something shiny and new from Apple.

The latest rumor in question comes from the author of a controversial new book MMW first covered earlier this week.

Ian Fineman, author of Tim Cook: The Core of Apple’s Problem, suggests that Eddy Cue, one of Apple’s senior vice presidents, is the “logical replacement” of Cook should the board choose to dump Cook.
