Later mobile business visionary and social technology architect Dan Romescu and I had some fruitful dialogues concerning the evolution scenarios of mobile AR. Actually he seriously caught fire and went to Mobile World Congress as an Augmented Citizen Advocate!

Now it will be also possible with iPhone. But even more: new iPhone has one more useful sensor for this kind of apps: autofocus. And autofocus in any camera device means the ability to measure distance to an object. I wonder if Apple will enable this kind functionality in the SDK… That would give enormous possibilities to new apps.

When real-world and computer graphics objects are blended into real footage in real time, you have reached augmented reality (AR). Combining live video imagery with computer-generated graphics, motion-tracking and other data, Layar promises a mobile web where users can walk down a city street and receive real time demographic information, histories of buildings, and block-by-block news.

I think to get to the point of widespread mobile AR functionality, mobile devices have to become able to facilitate the advanced functions that bring AR to life. Growth will be driven by wider adoption of Android phones and the iPhone as well as the spread of technologies like digital compasses and accelerometers that help to power mobile AR. As smartphones become smarter, AR inches closer to becoming a reality.

Many first-person shooter video games simulate the viewpoint of someone using AR systems. In these games the AR can be used to give visual directions to a location, mark the direction and distance of another person who is not in line of sight, give information about equipment such as remaining bullets in a gun, and display a myriad of other images based on whatever the game designers intend. This is also called the head-up display.

I think the idea of augmented reality was first introduced in 1849 using a darkened theatre and surrounding the audience in imagery and sound. Known as virtual reality in the 1980’s, first Boeing in 1992 and eleven years later, GeoVector along with Vodafone, HP and Microsoft, Virtual Spectator and Animation Research Ltd showcased Actual Spectator AR app during America’s Cup.

The path of all successful technological evolution has one thing in common: it brings us closer to the way we naturally engage the world. If it does not, it becomes next year’s yard sale item. Interacting with content as layers over your surrounding environment will become the new way content is delivered as it gets us closer to the way we naturally engage the world. You will definitely want to explore this path toward the future.

Exactly, most analysts predict that mobile gaming will be the primary driver behind increased interest in mobile AR, with location-based search coming in
at a close second. That location-based relevance will make AR-based ad-networks more attractive to brands and advertisers as well..
