Lynne- you're right, carriers won't lose their reign anytime soon, but a shift has definitely begun...excellent analysis by the way!

The carriers will never 'lose their reign': they hold the all-important PIPE!
While I think the Nexus One may be the closest thing to being an iPhone contender (form, function, but still needing 100K apps or so), what it is not is a compelling D2C (direct to consumer) offer. Here's why...http://bit.ly/7feg9F

I think there will slowly be a switch to an ecosystem where the consumer's have all the power over the carriers. Even if we'll always need them, one day we'll be able to purchase the phone first (such as from Google) and then chose the carrier next, which will make carriers compete for business more than they ever have before. Still, we've a long way to go

It doesnt matter if the phones are free or sold unlocked independently of the service provider, you will always need a wireless carrier. This leaves them, the carriers, with the ultimate last word on which phones will be able to use their service.
