TwitterPeek’s Non-Impact on Mobile Marketing

Mobile Marketing TwitterPeeks Non Impact on Mobile MarketingWhile there are few doubts that the advent of social media has done anything but help mobile marketing, there are some concerns that the new TwitterPeek device (a handset designed especially for use with Twitter) might be more of a dud than a stud when it comes to assisting mobile marketers.

The TwitterPeek device, which is solely built around Twitter, does exactly what you would expect from it. Using the device’s small keyboard, you can compose 140 character messages and follow your friends and associates on the popular social networking service.

However, that’s about all you can do. No e-mail, no text messages, and, consequently, no real opportunity for mobile marketers. Nonetheless, the TwitterPeek still comes at a somewhat substantial cost. The TwitterPeek is available on Amazon for $99 with six months of service included. A $7.95 a month fee is charged thereafter.

Although the US editor for Econsultancy, Meghan Keane, says TwitterPeek “works better as a mobile marketing device than a smartphone,” the mobile marketing community – for now at least – appears reluctant to embrace the device as a tool rather than a toy.

Another tool to do what Twitter already does. The current Tweeting format is more limiting than the 160 character count in text messaging which may potentially shrink the already small message window in the mobile marketing space.

Will look forward to see how Twitter innovates.

this is one of the worst ideas i’ve seen in a long time. with no email/sms this will force the vast majority of mobile marketers who purchase this product to carry around an extra device.

since i think it’s probably safe to assume that most mobile marketers are at the leading edge of mobile technology, there is no reason to believe that this $100 product (+ monthly fees) should replace an iPhone (or RIM or android device) with a twitter application like tweet deck, etc.

additionally, when a mobile device isn’t needed (i.e. while in the office) a desktop/laptop will do just fine.

this is just a ridiculous device and i don’t see it making any inroads into the smart phone market, because, well, it’s really not even a smart phone. wow.
