Interesting post, Justin, and I think you're right that location-aware browsers and engines are a big part of what makes mobile search different from desktop or traditional search. Not just in keyword-based search, but also in augmented reality and mobile visual search products like Google Goggles, or the audio search capabilities of something like Shazam (http://bit.ly/9wAgn9). Mobile search and desktop search are inherently different, and the techniques for optimization will need to be different as well. I don't, however, see how this is different from SEO. If you're optimizing for different keywords or optimizing a local search feed instead of a web page or a search suggestion instead of a search results page, you're still optimizing content that will be found in search engines. Of course the ranking factors will change, as they do in local search or video search on the desktop, but to me it's still SEO.

Again, interesting post. If you're interested in mobile SEO, we've been discussing it in a private Google Group for several years now. I'd be happy to send you an invitation if you'd like.
